Purple Eagles Open Season With Commanding Victory Over Longwood University

FARMVILLE, Va. – The Niagara baseball team opened its 2018 slate with a statement, defeating Longwood University, 15-2.

Game Recap
  • Longwood took the early lead, scoring twice in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Niagara halved the Lancers' lead, 2-1, in the top of the third. With Julian Gallup on base, Cullen singled to third to score Gallup.
  • In the top of the sixth inning, Trevor McCauley batted in two runs. Then, with two runners on base, Dziados homered to left field, giving the Purple Eagles a 6-2 lead.
  • Niagara had a dominant seventh inning. Cullen opened the inning with a solo homerun to right field. Runs from McCauley, Wyatt Olson, Dziados, Joseph Tevlin and Dawson Bailey have the Purple Eagles a commanding 12-2 lead over the Lancers.
  • The Purple Eagles tacked on three more runs in the ninth to earn a dominant 15-2 victory over Longwood.

Coach's Corner
  • "Obviously we had a good day today," said head coach Rob McCoy. "We've spent a ton of time and energy focusing on the parts of the game we can control and we did that very well today. Every guy did their job and when that happens, we can be very good. Our focus now is on tomorrow. We expect their best effort and need to match it."

Inside the Numbers
  • Cullen went 6-for-6 at the plate and had a team-high three runs. He also had three RBIs, one triple and one homerun.
  • Dziados had a team-high four RBIs. He hit one homerun and scored twice.
  • McCauley, Gallup and Tevlin each had one double.
  • Alexandre Jones (1-0) earned his first collegiate victory. He struck out two batters and allowed zero runs and only one hit in 4.0 innings pitched.
  • Cody Eckerson, who earned the start on the mound, fanned seven in 4.0 innings pitched.
