Baseball Defeats Saint Peter's, 3-2

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Niagara baseball team won a close game with Saint Peter's, 3-2, on Saturday to improve to 11-9 on the season.

Game Recap
  • The Purple Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after Battaglia singled to left field to send Joel Brophy home.
  • NU extended its lead, 2-0, in the bottom of the second. With two runners on base, Tanner Kirwer singled, then advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop. Nick Bernick scored.
  • The Peacocks cut Niagara's lead in half in the top of the fifth, but the Purple Eagles quickly answered. In the bottom of the fifth, Cullen had an RBI single to give NU the 3-1 lead.
  • Though Saint Peter's scored once more in the top of the seventh, the Peacocks could not overcome the Purple Eagles and Niagara came away with the victory.

Inside the Numbers
  • Cullen and Battaglia led Niagara with one RBI each and six players recorded one hit.
  • Brophy and Philippe Langlois each had a double for the Purple Eagles and Cullen, Kirwer and Battaglia each had one stolen base.
  • Cody Eckerson (3-1) earned the win on the mound. He struck out four batters and allowed only four hits and one run in 5.0 innings pitched.
  • Matt McCuen, who relieved Nate Mascellino to start the ninth inning, earned his team-high fourth save of the season.
