Game Notes (Cornell)
A three-game Thanksgiving week for the Niagara Purple Eagles hockey team kicks off Tuesday night at Lynah Rink with Niagara's first matchup against a nationally-ranked team this season, the Cornell Big Red. The Purple Eagles will have 10 days' rest from game action before taking on Cornell, having previously split a two-game home series with the Army Black Knights on Nov. 10 and 11. Last weekend, Cornell took a 6-1 win over St. Lawrence before enduring its first loss of the season to current No. 5 Clarkson by a score of 4-0.
Opening faceoff on Tuesday night between No. 7/7 Cornell and Niagara is slated for 7:00 p.m. The game will be streamed live online for subscribers of both ESPN3 (USA) and TSN GO (Canada) in addition to the Ivy League Digital Network. Back in the Polls
• On Monday, the Purple Eagles received votes in the
USCHO.com poll for the third-straight week, receiving a season-high seven points on Monday.
• It is the first time Niagara has received votes three straight weeks since March 2013 when the Purple Eagles earned the first at-large berth by any Atlantic Hockey team to the NCAA Tournament.
• Niagara is 133-92-17 all-time when ranked or receiving votes in a national poll, including a 48-55-11 record on the road.
Making the Junior Jump
• Niagara's junior class has powered the majority of the team's offense this season, accounting for 42.7 percent of the Niagara scoring (35 of 82 points) through 10 games.
• Juniors Tanner Lomsnes (8+3) is second on the team in scoring with 11 points, while Johnny Curran (5+3) and Sean King (3+5) are tied for fourth at eight points.
• The trio of King, Lomsnes, and Nick Farmer has combined for 19 points in Niagara's last six games.
• Lomsnes leads the way in that group with nine points; he recorded eight points (6+2) in a four-game scoring streak from Oct. 27 to Nov. 3 before being held to one goal in two games against Army on Nov. 10 and 11.
Cardiac Kids
• Niagara is currently 5-0 in one-goal games after being 2-6 in those situations a year ago.
• Niagara won its first two overtime games to start the season, taking overtime wins over Robert Morris (Oct. 6) and RPI (Oct. 20). before a 3-3 tie against Bentley on Nov. 3.
Scouting the Big Red
• Cornell holds a top-10 ranking in both national polls for the second-straight week. The Big Red opened the season with seven straight wins before the streak was snapped by Clarkson last Saturday in a matchup of two top-10 squads.
• Cornell has won 14 of the 16 matchups all-time with Niagara, and the Purple Eagles have never won in 10 games at Lynah Rink.
• The Purple Eagles' lone two wins over the Big Red came in consecutive seasons at the Syracuse Invitational Championship; Niagara defeated Cornell 3-2 in overtime on Nov. 27, 1999 and 4-3 on Nov. 26, 2000.
• Most recently, Niagara and Cornell played a home-and-home series on Oct. 30 and 31, 2015. The Purple Eagles pushed the Big Red to the limit in the first game at Dwyer before falling 3-2 in overtime, and Cornell took a 4-0 win at Lynah Rink in the series finale.
• Freshman goaltender Matthew Galayda has led the way this season for the Big Red. He has started all eight games in goal, allowing just 12 goals on 159 shots for a 1.64 goals-against average and .925 save percentage.
• Senior Trevor Yates paces the Big Red offensively with five goals and eight points in eight games. Anthony Angello (2+5), Morgan Barron (3+4), and Jeff Malott (3+4) are all tied at second on the team with seven points.
