NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The men's and women's swimming & diving teams kick off their seasons this weekend hosting Fredonia for a dual meet on Friday, Oct. 20th at 5:00 p.m. The men host Binghamton for a dual meet on Saturday, Oct. 21st at 12:00 p.m. and the women host Binghamton and Siena for a double-dual meet also starting at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Men's Season Preview
- The Purple Eagles return 17 from last year's squad and welcome six newcomers.
- The team finished in sixth place at the 2017 MAAC Championships in February.
- Niagara was tabbed sixth in the MAAC preseason coaches' poll.
Women's Season Preview
- Niagara returns 17 from last year's squad and welcomes nine newcomers.
- The team finished fifth at the 2017 MAAC Championships and broke two school records. The 400 free relay team of Sydney Kligys, Annie Eckhardt, Julia Casolo and Kristen Suarez finished in a record time of 3:33.45 and then-freshman Hannah Charlton made Niagara history in the 200 fly with a career-best time of 2:08.78.
- The women's team was also selected sixth in the MAAC preseason coaches' poll.
Last Meeting with Fredonia
- The Purple Eagles and the Blue Devils last matched up on Oct. 7, 2016. The Purple Eagles won 21 of 26 events with women defeating Fredonia, 151-82, and the men beating the Blue Devils, 139-99.
- The men set a 200 free relay record with the relay team of Robert Brown, Nick Rogers, Andreas Rintel and Andrew Wilson finishing in 1:29.51.
- Julia Casolo swam the 100 butterfly in 59.20, the fastest time in that event by a Niagara swimmer in a dual meet.
Last Meeting with Binghamton & Siena
- The men's team last matched up with Binghamton on Oct. 22, 2016 and was defeated by the Bearcats, 164.5-129.5. The women faced Binghamton and Siena in a double dual meet on Oct. 22, 2016 and defeated Siena, 209-85, and fell to Binghamton, 158.5-131.5.
- Nastassja Posso won two events for the Purple Eagles, picking up a win in the 500 free with a time of 5:22.68 and in the 1000 free with a time of 11:06.04.
- Purple Eagles alum JaRon Williams qualified for the NCAA Zone Championships with a score of 301.57 in the 1-meter dive.
