Women's Soccer Falls To Navy

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's soccer team fell to Navy, 3-1, in the teams' first meeting in program history.

Game Recap
  • Niagara took its first shot in the ninth minute; Betts took a shot on goal that was saved by Navy's keeper.
  • The Midshipmen got on the board first with a header, following a corner kick, from Clare MacAdam, assisted by Karli Sottung, in the 20th minute.
  • Niagara created chances late in the first half, taking two shots in the 34th minute; Laura Ortiz's shot was saved and Hailey Bicknell's shot went wide.
  • The Midshipmen scored quickly to open the second half, giving themselves a 2-1 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • The Purple Eagles continued to battle and in the 63rd minute, Assia Sidhoum scored the first goal of her collegiate career to half Navy's lead. She was assisted by Betts.
  • Though Niagara continued to play strong defensively, the Midshipmen snuck a goal by van Nuland in the 71st minute to secure their victory.


Coach's Corner

  • "Tough loss tonight," said Niagara head coach Peter Veltri. "I thought the girls competed and worked hard. Individually, I thought we had some very good performances. Hopefully we can put it all together in our next game."

Inside the Numbers
  • Goalkeeper van Nuland recorded a career-high six saves.
  • Courtney Betts led Niagara with two shots.
  • Freshman forward Emma Lindke made her first collegiate debut, clocking 19 minutes in the second half of the game.
