Women's Soccer Topped By Little 3 Rival St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, N.Y. – The Niagara women's soccer team dropped a tough game to Little 3 rival St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon.

Game Recap
  • The Bonnies got on the board first in the first period of the game; in the 13th minute, with a loose ball in the box, Sydney Cerza took a shot which beat van Nuland to the right. St. Bonaventure scored again in the 27th minute to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Niagara quickly answered; Bucken took a shot which was deflected by the goalie back to Ortiz, who scored through traffic in front of the box in the 28th minute to leave Niagara trailing by only one score, 2-1.
  • The Purple Eagles created chances early in the second half. In the 47th minute, Ortiz took a shot which was saved by the Bonnies' keeper. Kori Thorne took her second shot of the day in the 53rd minute, which was saved, and Shawnique Samuels attempted a goal in the 55th minute but it went wide right.
  • St. Bonaventure scored in the 56th minute on a shot to the upper left corner of the net from about 20 yards out and scored their final goal in the 64th minute.
  • Niagara continued to create chances for the remainder of the game. Ortiz took her final shot in the 71st minute; it was saved. Courtney Betts' shot in the 75th minute went wide left and Hailey Bicknell's shot in the 83rd minute was blocked by the Bonnies.

Coach's Corner
  • "Our break comes at a great time, as we have two weeks to get some players healthy and ready for conference play," said Purple Eagles head coach Peter Veltri. "On a positive note, we had lots of young players gain valuable experience over the past four games. This time off will give us a chance to solidify who we are for the remainder of the season."

  • Ortiz led Niagara with five shots; all five were shots on goal.
  • Bucken's assist was the first of her collegiate career.
