Baseball Defeats Saint Peter's, Earns Best Conference Start In Ten Seasons

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Purple Eagles improved their conference record to 5-1 after an 11-0 victory over Saint Peter's on Sunday, earning their second shutout in a row and getting their best conference start since 2006.

Niagara (9-18-1, 5-1 MAAC) once again got off to a quick start against Saint Peter's (4-18, 0-6 MAAC). In the top of the first inning, Taylor Hackett singled to right field, scoring Michael Fuhrman for the Purple Eagles' first score of the game. In the top of the second, Tanner Kirwer doubled down the left field line to send home Joel Brophy, who was already on base. Greg Cullen then singled to second base; Kirwer advanced to third and scored on a fielding error by second base to give Niagara a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the third.

The Purple Eagles extended their lead to 7-0 in the top of the third inning with scores from Christian Vangeison, Julian Gallup, Kirwer and Cullen.

In the top of the sixth, with the Peacocks still scoreless, Fuhrman scored his second run of the game. A homer from Vangeison, which also sent home Greg Rodgers, helped the Purple Eagles further pull away from their opponents, 10-0. Vangeison scored Niagara's final run in the top of the eighth inning.

Vangeison went 3-for-5 at the plate and had a team-high three runs. Kirwer went 5-for-6 at the plate, scored two runs and had a team-best three RBIs. In the field, Vangeison led the team with 12 putouts and Cullen had a team-high six assists. On the mound, Zachary Kolodziejski (1-3) earned his first win of the season, facing 30 batters and striking out eight in 8.0 innings pitched.

The Purple Eagles are back in action on Tuesday, April 5 in a doubleheader with local rival Buffalo.
