The Purple Eagles lacrosse team enters its second week of the season with two road games on the slate. On Tuesday, Niagara begins the week in Hamilton, NY against the Colgate Raiders. Niagara opened its season with a tough road loss at Binghamton, as a last-second comeback attempt to force overtime later ended in a loss.
Last Time Out
- The Purple Eagles opened their season with a 6-5 overtime loss on the road against the Binghamton Bearcats.
- In a low-scoring, defensive battle, Niagara fell behind 5-2 in the second period, but scored three unanswered goals, including two in the final 20 seconds of regulation, to tie the game before eventually falling in overtime.
- Freshman Alexis Morales led the team offensively with three goals.
- Taylor Wolf and Hailey D'Hont also scored for the Purple Eagles, while Rachel MacCheyne and Caroline Crump picked up assists.
- The Purple Eagles earned a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal, but Binghamton got 11 saves from Erin McNulty in the win.
- Defensively, Niagara nearly doubled up Binghamton in both ground balls (23-13) and caused turnovers (11-6). Morales, Wolf, and MacCheyne each caused a team-leading two turnovers.
Niagara Notes- The six goals allowed to Binghamton was the lowest goal total by a Niagara opponent since the Purple Eagles held Detroit to four goals in a 14-4 win on Apr. 2, 2014.
- Taylor Wolf scored a hat trick in that win over Detroit as a freshman. That was the last time a Purple Eagles rookie scored three goals in a game before Morales did so at Binghamton.
- All but one of Niagara's seven offensive points at Binghamton came from freshmen.
Scouting the Raiders- This is the first all-time meeting between Niagara and Colgate.
- Colgate finished the 2015 season with a 6-2 record in the Patriot League and an overall record of 10-6. In the postseason, the Raiders were knocked off in the Patriot League semifinals by Navy.
- Raiders sophomore midfielder Haley O'Hanlon was named the Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year in addition to earning Preseason All-Patriot League honors.
- Colgate lost its season opener to Vermont on Feb. 20 by a score of 14-12.
- Isabel Kreitler led the team with five goals and two assists in the loss, while O'Hanlon registered three goals and two assists.
