Listen: Head Coach Dave Burkholder Joins Sabres Hockey HotlineAfter playing seven of eight January games to date on the road, the Purple Eagles hockey team returns to Dwyer Arena for their first home series since Dec. 4, 2015. The Army West Point Black Knights travel to Niagara University for the only two games between the two teams this season. Niagara has won 13 of 14 games in the all-time series with Army West Point, including wins in eight straight games.
Both games can be heard on 1340 AM WLVL and PurpleEagles.com/Watch with Paul Hamilton on play-by-play. Friday's game will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Sports (Ch. 87) and replayed Jan. 30 at 6:00 a.m. and Feb. 2 at 1:00 p.m. on Ch. 323. Saturday's game will be broadcast on LCTV. Last Time Out Â
- The Purple Eagles were swept in two games at Air Force last weekend, falling 3-0 on Jan. 22 and 3-1 on Jan. 23.
- Niagara was outshot 45-14 in the opening game of the weekend, its third shutout loss of the season.
- Jackson Teichroeb was phenomenal in net, stopping 42 shots and keeping Niagara within one goal until the 15:39 mark of the third period.
- Niagara came out with a much stronger effort Saturday, outshooting the Falcons 13-6 through 20 minutes to start the weekend's second game.
- After Air Force opened the scoring on a second period 5-on-3 advantage, TJ Sarcona tied the game for Niagara off a 3-on-2 rush with Stephen Pietrobon and Matt Chiarantano.
- Although the Purple Eagles had numerous chances to take the lead in the final period, it was Air Force who scored the game-winning goal with 7:52 to play and added an empty-net goal in the closing seconds.
- Teichroeb made another 23 saves on 25 shots faced, as the junior fell to 1-6-1 on the season.
- Teichroeb now ranks second in Atlantic Hockey in goals-against average (2.20), trailing only Air Force goaltender Shane Starrett. Teichroeb is also tied for fourth in the conference with a .920 save percentage.
Mr. 2000Â
- With 32 saves this weekend against Army West Point, Jackson Teichroeb will reach 2,000 career saves at Niagara.
- Teichroeb will be the fourth goaltender in Niagara history to meet that career milestone, joining Jeff Van Nynatten (2,956), Juliano Pagliero (2,699), and Greg Gardner (2,639).
- In addition, Teichroeb will be the first Niagara goaltender to surpass 2,000 career saves before his senior season.
- Teichroeb will become the tenth active NCAA goaltender to reach the 2,000-save milestone.
Scouting the Black KnightsÂ
- The Army West Point Black Knights, currently 5-11-6 overall and 3-9-6 against Atlantic Hockey opponents, are ninth in the conference.
- Niagara has won 13 of 14 all-time meetings against the Black Knights, with the lone loss coming on Nov. 27, 2010.
- The Purple Eagles have won eight consecutive games in the all-time series.
- Niagara won two games against Army West Point at home last season by scores of 3-1 and 6-1.
- Since Jan. 1, the Black Knights have scored a conference-worst 0.80 goals per game, but are second-best in the conference with 1.8 goals against per game in that time.
- Army West Point junior goaltender Parker Gahagen is a Buffalo native. He has a 5-7-6 record this season with a 2.52 goals-against average and .920 save percentage.
- Ryan Kuhn played three games with Gahagen on the Buffalo Jr. Sabres (OJHL) in 2012-13.
