Purple Eagles Prepare To Battle The Red Foxes

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's lacrosse team wraps up its two-game home stand Wednesday against Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play.  The Purple Eagles and Red Foxes square off at Niagara Field at 4 p.m.

NIAGARA TIDBITS
• Niagara enters Wednesday's contest 4-8, having won its first game of the season on Friday, Feb. 27 against Cincinnati after dropping a 14-7 decision to Lehigh in the season-opener. Despite keeping the score at 1-0 for the first 20 minutes of the contest and holding the No. 14 Ohio State to its third least number of goals scored in a game all year, the Purple Eagles fell in a 15-2 decision to the Buckeyes on Mar. 1.
• Niagara then dropped a 21-4 decision to the No. 4 Florida Gators on Mar. 7 before edging Stetson, 10-9. The Purple Eagles fell to the Michigan Wolverines, 15-8, on Mar. 14 before taking down Little 3 Rival St. Bonaventure, 16-12. NU fell in a two close decisions to Robert Morris (12-10) and Binghamton (9-7). Niagara dropped its first conference matchup to the Monmouth Hawks, 12-7, before defeating the Iona Gaels in a 10-7 decision on Mar. 28. Most recently, NU fell 16-8 to the Fairfield Stags on Apr. 4.
• The Purple Eagles offense runs through seniors Carrie-Jo Farrugia and Erin Patenaude as well as sophomore Taylor Wolf.  Farrugia leads the squad with 25 goals and seven assists, while her teammates Wolf (18 goals, six assists) and Patenaude (11 goals, eight assists) are second and third on the team in points, respectively. 
• Brittany Delano, Hannah Barnett and Danielle Maio have all chipped in eight goals for the Purple Eagles while Molly Gray and Cailyn Negus stand with seven goals on the season thus far. Freshman Grace Hunt has also contributed five goals and eight assists.
• Maio leads the way with 33 draw controls won, while Barnett and Delano have caused 11 turnovers for the Purple and White. Sophomore Kara Martin leads NU with 28 groundballs.
• Andrea Francisco has played just over 550 minutes after the 12 games this season, making 69 saves for a 3-6-0 record. Amanda Yavorek made a career best eight saves in NU's loss to Ohio State. Overall, the sophomore has made 18 saves in 169 minutes of play, posting a goals against average of 13.09 and a save percentage of .327.
 
LAST TIME OUT
• Niagara dropped a 16-8 conference decision to the Fairfield Stags on Saturday, Apr. 4 at Niagara Field.
• Senior Carrie-Jo Farrugia led the Niagara attack with four goals on five shots, while fellow senior Brittany Delano had a pair of goals for NU. Freshmen Grace Hunt and Cailyn Negus also contributed to the Niagara offense. Hunt added a goal and two assists while Negus marked her seventh goal of the season.
• For the game, Fairfield outshot Niagara 29-19 and also held a 16-10 lead in draw controls. Niagara took a 17-13 advantage in ground balls and a 9-3 edge in caused turnovers.  Individually, Farrugia won three draw controls while Kara Martin picked up four ground balls. Andrea Francisco and Amanda Yavorek combined for seven saves on the game. 

ABOUT MARIST
• The Red Foxes come to NU with a 6-4 overall mark, falling 2-1 in the conference after a 13-10 loss to the Canisius Golden Griffins last Wednesday.
• Offensively Marist is led by Allison Gionta who has 21 goals and a team-high 16 assists in 10 games. Three other Red Foxes have cracked the 20-point mark, including Kara McHugh (22 goals, six assists) and Lexi Brannigan (18 goals, seven assists).
• Abigail Witczak is the go to goaltender for the Red Foxes, making 75 saves for a .439 save percentage and an 9.73 goals against average.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE RED FOXES

• The Red Foxes hold a slim 13-7 advantage over Niagara in an all-time series that dates back to 1997.
• The teams squared off last season where Niagara was defeated by Marist, 19-7, April 9 at Leonidoff Field. Carrie-Jo Farrugia led the Niagara offense with a trio of points off two goals and an assist, while Maria BattistaErin PatenaudeKayla SmithBrittany Delano and Jaclyn Schreiber each tallied a goal for the Purple Eagles.

CALLING ALL ALUMNI
• The Purple Eagles will be hosting an alumni game and celebration on Saturday April 18th.  Alumni will face off at 1pm (odd years vs. even years), with the 2015 team taking on MAAC foe Manhattan for Senior Day at 4pm. 
• The lacrosse alums are then welcomed at the Brickyard Pub in Lewiston, N.Y. for appetizers and an opportunity to meet the team immediately following the game.

ON DECK
• Niagara hits the road on Saturday, April 11 as the Purple Eagles faceoff against the Quinnipiac Bobcats.  The game is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
