Women’s Lacrosse Set To Battle Canisius

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's lacrosse team prepares for its battle against the Canisius Golden Griffins on Wednesday, April 15 at 7 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.

NIAGARA TIDBITS
• Niagara enters Wednesday's contest 5-9 (2-3 MAAC), having won its first game of the season on Friday, Feb. 27 against Cincinnati after dropping a 14-7 decision to Lehigh in the season-opener. Despite keeping the score at 1-0 for the first 20 minutes of the contest and holding the No. 14 Ohio State to its third least number of goals scored in a game all year, the Purple Eagles fell in a 15-2 decision to the Buckeyes on Mar. 1.
• Niagara then dropped a 21-4 decision to the No. 4 Florida Gators on Mar. 7 before edging Stetson, 10-9. The Purple Eagles fell to the Michigan Wolverines, 15-8, on Mar. 14 before taking down Little 3 Rival St. Bonaventure, 16-12. NU fell in a two close decisions to Robert Morris (12-10) and Binghamton (9-7). Niagara dropped its first conference matchup to the Monmouth Hawks, 12-7, before defeating the Iona Gaels in a 10-7 decision on Mar. 28. NU fell 16-8 to the Fairfield Stags on Apr. 4 and suffered a 13-7 loss to Marist on Apr. 8 before beating Quinnipiac on Apr. 11, 16-11.
• The Purple Eagles offense runs through seniors Carrie-Jo Farrugia and Erin Patenaude as well as sophomore Taylor Wolf.  Farrugia leads the squad with 27 goals and nine assists, while her teammates Wolf (23 goals, six assists) and Patenaude (15 goals, nine assists) are second and third on the team in points, respectively. 
• Molly Gray has added 11 goals for the Purple Eagles while Hannah Barnett and Danielle Maio have both chipped in 10 goals apiece.  Brittany Delano has added nine goals while freshman Cailyn Negus stands with seven goals on the season thus far. Teammate Grace Hunt has also contributed six goals and a team-high 10 assists.
• Maio leads the way with 42 draw controls won, while Delano has caused 13 turnovers for the Purple and White. Sophomore Kara Martin leads NU with 35 groundballs.
• Andrea Francisco has played just over 630 minutes after the 14 games this season, making 84 saves for a 3-7-0 record.  Amanda Yavorek has made 24 saves in 204 minutes of play, posting a goals against average of 12.33 and a save percentage of .364.
 
CAREER BESTS
• Sophomore goalie Andrea Francisco made a career-high 12 saves during the Niagara's game against Marist while Amanda Yavorek made a career best eight saves in NU's loss to Ohio State.
• Classmate Taylor Wolf's four goals in NU's season opener against Lehigh are a new career high, topping her previous high of three goals which occurred on three different occasions last season.
• In Niagara's win over Quinnipiac, Erin Patenaude scored a career-high four goals while Molly Gray added three assists to her three-goal effort for a career-high six points.
 
TEAM STATS
• The Purple Eagles have scored 124 goals in the 14 games this season, six of which were in double figures.  The team's best offensive output came in the win over Quinnipiac (April 11) where the team tied a season-high in goals (16) and assists (8).  The last time NU put together a 16-plus goal effort was on March 27, 2015 when the Purple and White handed the Bonnies a 16-12 beating.
• The team is averaging 8.86 goals per game while attempting 22.1 shots per game. Niagara also has 56 assists this season.
• Defensively, Niagara has allowed 12.50 goals per game with the opposition taking 26.8 shots per contest.  
• The Purple Eagles have picked up 259 ground balls and caused 111 turnovers.  
 
LAST TIME OUT
• Senior Erin Patenaude, junior Molly Gray and sophomore Taylor Wolf each tallied a hat trick en route to a 16-11 triumph over the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Apr. 11.
• Patenaude finished the game with a career-high four goals as Gray added three assists to her three-goal effort.  Wolf had three goals on the afternoon while Maio and Barnett both totaled a pair of goals. Freshman Jillian Ford and Farrugia each added a goal in the win while Hunt and Maio contributed two assists.
• The Purple Eagles' defense was led by sophomore Kara Martin who collected a team-high four ground balls in the victory.  Farrugia caused a team-high three turnovers, while Maio was the team-leader in draw controls, with seven. 
• Sophomore Amanda Yavorek made six saves for the win while Andrea Francisco pushed aside three Bobcats shots.

ABOUT CANISIUS
• The Golden Griffins' will play its final regular season home game against NU, boasting an eight-game winning streak.  Canisius stands at a 9-5 overall, and is 6-0 in conference play recently topping Fairfield in a close 11-10 decision. 
• Tori Quinn leads the squad with 55 points and 25 goals this season.  Taylor Giglio ranks second on the Griffins with 41 points (30 goals, 11 assists) while Erica Evans is third in points with 31 goals and four assists.
• Quinn tops Canisius in groundballs picked up (31) while Ashley Bull leads the draw control race with 66 wins.   
• Kayla Scully has appeared in 12 games in goal for Canisius, posting a 9.90 goals against average and a .426 save percentage. 
 
ALL-TIME VS. THE GRIFFS

• The Purple Eagles will be meeting up with the Griffins for the 21st time in a series that dates back to 1998.  The series is tied 10-10 against its cross-town rival, as Niagara won the first 10 meetings and Canisius has won the last 10 meetings.  
• Last season, the Griffs dropped the Purple and White by a 19-12 score at Niagara Field.  Niagara's 12 goals came from Danielle MaioErin Patenaude, Carrie-Jo Farrugia, Kayla Smith, Brittany Delano and Jaclyn Schreiber.  Starting goaltender Andrea Francisco made 10 saves in the game.

SAYONARA, SENIORS
•  The senior class of Hannah BarnettBrittany DelanoCarrie-Jo FarrugiaEmily Fleetwood and Erin Patenaude will play in its final regular season game at Niagara Field on Saturday, Apr. 18.
• The five seniors have combined for 194 goals, 89 assists and 283 points in 60 games played.  Farrugia will leave NU ranked in the top-10 on Niagara's single-season goals and points list and will be in the top-10 of Niagara's career goals, assists and points record.  The attacker currently sits in third with 94 total goals and fourth in points with 146.

CALLING ALL ALUMNI
• The Purple Eagles will be hosting an alumni game and celebration on Saturday April 18th.  Alumni will face off at 1pm (odd years vs. even years), with the 2015 team taking on MAAC foe Manhattan for Senior Day at 4pm. 
• The lacrosse alums are then welcomed at the Brickyard Pub in Lewiston, N.Y. for appetizers and an opportunity to meet the team immediately following the game.
