POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Niagara Purple Eagles were close to another rally against the Marist Red Foxes, but ultimately fell just short with a 3-2 loss on Sunday at McCann Field.
Anthony Firenzi led the way at the plate with a 3-for-4 afternoon and a run scored.
Liam Stroud got the start on the mound and took the loss after he surrendered just the three runs on nine hits over 5.2 innings.
Stroud retired the first eight batters he faced in order before a two-out single in the bottom of the third inning gave the Red Foxes (9-16; 4-5 MAAC) their first baserunner of the afternoon. Marist was able to get on the scoreboard and take a 1-0 lead in its half of the fourth with a two-out RBI single to left field. The home side was kept at bay until a walk and a hit by pitch brought in two more runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth and extended the lead to 3-0.
Niagara (8-18-2; 5-4 MAAC) responded in the top of the seventh. Firenzi led off with a double to left field and
Christian Vangeison followed up with a single down the right-field line that brought Firenzi around to score.
Joel Brophy smacked a ground-rule double to left field that allowed
Julian Gallup, who pinch ran for Vangeison, to advance to third. With runners on second and third and no outs,
Trevor McCauley brought Gallup home with a sac fly to right field to cut the deficit to 3-2.
That was as close as the Purple Eagles would come as they were held off of the scoreboard through the final two innings as the Red Foxes came away with the 3-2 win.
Daniel Procopio pitched the final 2.1 innings for NU. He didn't surrender a hit and struck out two.
The Purple Eagles return home to continue MAAC play as they host the Monmouth Hawks for a three-game series with a doubleheader on April 18 followed by a single game on April 19. First pitch for both days is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Bobo Field.
