Women’s Lacrosse Opens MAAC Play At Home Against Monmouth

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women's lacrosse team opens its 2015 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference schedule when it hosts Monmouth on Wednesday, March 25.  The contest against the Hawks is set for 2 p.m.

NIAGARA TIDBITS
• Niagara enters Friday's contest 3-6, having won its first game of the season on Friday, Feb. 27 against Cincinnati after dropping a 14-7 decision to Lehigh in the season-opener. Despite keeping the score at 1-0 for the first 20 minutes of the contest and holding the No. 14 Ohio State to its third least number of goals scored in a game all year, the Purple Eagles fell in a 15-2 decision to the Buckeyes on Mar. 1.
• Niagara then dropped a 21-4 decision to the No. 4 Florida Gators on Mar. 7 before edging Stetson, 10-9. The Purple Eagles fell to the Michigan Wolverines, 15-8, on Mar. 14 before taking down Little 3 Rival St. Bonaventure, 16-12. Most recently, NU fell in a two close decisions to Robert Morris (12-10) and Binghamton (9-7).
• The Purple Eagles offense runs through seniors Carrie-Jo Farrugia and Erin Patenaude as well as sophomore Taylor Wolf.  Farrugia leads the squad with 18 goals and seven assists, while her teammates Patenaude (nine goals, eight assists) and Wolf (12 goals, three assists) are second and third on the team in points, respectively. 
• Hannah Barnett and Molly Gray have also chipped in on offense with seven goals and three assists each on the season.
Danielle Maio leads the way with 28 draw controls won, while Barnett has caused eight turnovers for the Purple and White. 
Andrea Francisco has played just over 410 minutes after the nine games this season, making 48 saves for a 2-4-0 record. Amanda Yavorek made a career best eight saves in NU's loss to Ohio State. Overall, the sophomore has made 15 saves in 126 minutes of play, posting a goals against average of 13.30 and a save percentage of .349.
 
LAST TIME OUT
• The Purple Eagles dropped a close 9-7 decision to Binghamton on Monday, Mar. 23 at Niagara Field. 
• Carrie-Jo Farrugia led the Niagara attack with her fourth hat trick of the season finishing with three goals and one assist for four points. Brittany Delano contributed two goals while Erin Patenaude and Cailyn Negus added one goal each. Freshman Grace Hunt also had three helpers in the game. Sophomore goalie Andrea Francisco started the game for the Purple Eagles, making seven saves for NU.
• Binghamton held a 24-22 edge in shots while Niagara controlled 11 draw controls, compared to just seven for the Bearcats.  The Purple Eagles' defense also caused five turnovers, while picking up 15 ground balls. 

ABOUT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY
• Monmouth is coming off a 15-7 victory over Oregon on Saturday, Mar. 21. Senior Allison Stathius put together a five point afternoon, including a game-leading four goals. Freshman Alexa Smith scored a trio of goals for the Blue & White.
• Overall, Olivia Higson leads the team with 20 points (17 goals, three assists), while Marial Pierce (eight goals, eight assists) and Stathius (14 goals, one assist) are second and third on the team in points, respectively.
• Katie Donohoe has played the bulk of the minutes in net, accumulating a .480 save percentage to go along with an 8.35 goals against average on the season.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE HAWKS

• Wednesday's game will be the third time the two sides face each other, with the all-time series record tied, 1-1.
• In their last meeting on April 5, 2014, Niagara defeated Monmouth, 12-8, at the Hawks' home field.
 
ON DECK
• The Purple Eagles continue conference play on Saturday, March 28 when Niagara travels to New Rochelle, N.Y. to take on the Iona Gaels at 1 p.m.
