NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – On Monday, the Niagara hockey team made a midseason addition to its active roster with forward
Johnny Curran. A former member of the Aurora Tigers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League and the Smiths Falls Bears of the Central Canada Hockey League, the 5-foot-10, 175-pound Curran joins the Purple Eagles as the tenth freshman on the 28-man roster.
"Johnny is a player that has been on our radar for a while now," head coach Dave Burkholder said. "He is a dynamic, fast player and a gifted goal scorer, and he's a terrific person who takes his schooling very seriously. Adding him to our roster for the second half of the season will have a huge impact on our team."
After leading the Junior 'B' Niagara Falls Canucks in scoring in the 2013-14 season, Curran was called up to Aurora to begin his Junior 'A' career, joining the Tigers for the 2014 postseason. The Niagara Falls, Ontario native picked up three goals and four assists in 16 playoff games.
In his first full season with Aurora in 2014-15, Curran posted 28 goals and 37 assists, giving him a team-leading 65 points in just 52 games played. Those totals included nine power-play goals, two shorthanded goals, and four game-winning goals. Curran then went on to score at a point-per-game pace in the 2015 postseason, adding seven goals and five assists in 12 playoff games. This season, Curran played 22 games with Smiths Falls, posting 11 goals and 19 assists for 30 points.
"Throughout his junior career, Johnny has been a top scorer on every team he has played with," Burkholder added. "We are very impressed with the performance of the nine freshmen we began this season with, and we are glad to add Johnny to this class."
Through their first 16 games this season, the Niagara freshmen have combined for 34 of the team's 96 points of offense. With Curran in tow, the class will look to add to that total as Niagara concludes the season concludes with 18 games against Atlantic Hockey opponents. The Purple Eagles return to action on Jan. 2 and 3 in Milford, Conn. as they face the Sacred Heart Pioneers.
