The Niagara ice hockey team concluded its non-conference schedule last weekend with a 7-3 loss at 12th-ranked Michigan and a 3-2 overtime loss to the USA National Development Team. All 26 of the Purple Eagles' games remaining in the regular season are against Atlantic Hockey foes, starting with this weekend's two-game home series against the American International Yellow Jackets.
Opening faceoff is set for 7:05 p.m. on both Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21. Jeremy White will have the play-by-play on 1340 AM WLVL both nights, and both games will air on LCTV.
Last Time OutÂ
- In the second game in as many weeks against a Big Ten opponent, the Purple Eagles fell 7-3 against the 12th-ranked University of Michigan Wolverines.
- Freshmen Tanner Lomsnes and Niko Kovachis scored their first career goals for the Purple Eagles. Stanislav Dzakhov rounded out the scoring for Niagara.
- Stephen Pietrobon tallied two assists, while Lomsnes, Nick Farmer, and Vinny Muto each had one assist.
- Joe O'Brien started the game, but was pulled after surrendering three goals on 11 shots in the opening 10:41. Guillaume Therien finished the game, stopping 33 of 37 shots against.
- Niagara's three goals against Michigan were its most in a game against the Wolverines since scoring five in a 6-5 overtime loss in the first meeting between the clubs on Oct. 16, 1998.
- Niagara fell to 1-10-0 all-time versus Michigan.
A Night with the AmericansÂ
- To conclude their weekend trip to Michigan, Niagara faced off against the USA National Under-18 Team, falling 3-2 in overtime of a thrilling exhibition.
- Luke Edwards scored both goals for Niagara, with Derian Plouffe, Sean King, Stanislav Dzakhov, and Matt Dineen picking up assists.
- Joe O'Brien played the first half of the game, making 11 saves on 12 shots. Therien finished the remainder of the game, stopping 21 of 23 shots against.
- Niagara finished the year 1-1-0 in exhibitions after a 5-3 win on Oct. 6 versus the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks.
Scouting the Yellow JacketsÂ
- In 12 matchups all-time between Niagara and AIC, the Purple Eagles hold a record of 9-3-0.
- Last year, the Yellow Jackets swept Niagara in two games at Dwyer Arena, winning 3-1 on Oct. 31, 2014 and 4-2 on Nov. 1, 2014.
- This weekend's games are the first and second of four regular-season matchups between the two teams in 2015-16.
- AIC freshman Shawn McBride leads the Yellow Jackets with nine points (4+5) and is second among Atlantic Hockey freshmen in scoring.
- AIC earned their first win of the season Nov. 6 at Robert Morris in a 3-2 victory.
- The Yellow Jackets are first in Atlantic Hockey in total saves (380) and third in saves per game (34.5).
