Swimming and Diving Falls Short at Colgate

Final Meet Results

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles men's and women's swimming and diving teams fell in their meets against Colgate University Saturday afternoon. The men's team suffered a narrow defeat by a score of 122-117, while the women lost 137-83.

"The men showed great spirit as they battled back and forth all day," head coach Ben Nigro said. "The meet came down to the last relay.  Colgate got the relay win and five-point victory.

"The women were up against a very tough opponent today. Their individual performances were excellent and they look to be set up for a great meet in Akron in three weeks."

On the men's side, Robert Brown picked up big wins in the 50 free (21.41) and 100 free (47.30). Andreas Rintel and Nicolas Winograd took first and second in the 200 IM, respectively, with times of 1:56.47 and 2:00.52. The two traded spots in the 100 breaststroke, where Winograd (59.93) finished first followed closely by Rintel (1:00.01).

The Purple Eagles men also had strong performances on the diving board, where Noah Barnard won the one-meter event with a score of 244.13 while JaRon Williams finished first in the three-meter event with a 269.70. In the final event of the day, the team of James Crumm, Andrew Wilson, Nick Rogers, and Danny Leskowicz finished second in the 200 freestyle relay as Colgate's first-place finish clinched the win.

For the women, their lone win of the day against a talented Colgate squad came in the 200 freestyle relay, as the team of Julia Casolo, Brianna Smith, Annie Eckhardt, and Sydney Kligys finished first with a time of 1:42.49. Kligys (25.41) and Casolo (25.47) narrowly finished second and third to Colgate's Madison Fitzgerald who finished the 50 free in 25.23.

York also placed second in the 100 free with a time of 55.33, while Smith earned a second-place finish with a 1:03.25 in the 100 backstroke. Cara Mergner competed in both the one- and three-meter diving events, scoring a 199.35 in the one-meter and a 194.33 in the three-meter.

The swimming and diving teams now take a short recess for two weekends before the Zippy Invite in Akron, Ohio. The three-day meet from Dec. 4 to Dec. 6 will conclude Niagara's fall schedule in the pool.
