NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - With the men's swimming and diving team off for the week, the women's swimmers and divers hosted Youngstown State for a meet at the Oxy Aquatic Center Saturday. The Purple Eagles posted some strong times in the meet, but fell by a 196-99 score in the meet.
"After a tough outing last week, I felt our women came back and had very strong swims this week," head coach
Ben Nigro said. "Youngstown State is extremely talented and our women did not back down."
Three Purple Eagles won events in the loss to Youngstown State.
Brianna Smith led the way with an impressive time of 2:12.83 in the 200 backstroke, in addition to a second-place finish in the 100 butterfly in 59.28.
Julia Casolo led the finishers in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:18.24, while
Emma Pullano took first in the 200 individual medley in 2:23.18.
"Smith's performance in the 200 backstroke was amazing," Nigro added. "I was very pleased with the support the team showed one another today."
Angelica Gordon finished second to Pullano in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:25.89.
Sydney Kligys finished second in both the 50 and 100 free, with her time of 25.51 in the 50 free just two-hundredths of a second behind Youngstown State's Jana Janson.
Emily York took a second place finish in the 200 free in 2:01.48, while
Bridgette Ehrmann finished second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.90.
Both the men's and women's teams from Niagara return to action next Saturday. The Purple Eagles head north of the border to Canada for a Nov. 7 meet with the University of Waterloo at 2:00 p.m.
