NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – Niagara saw both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams fall to cross-town rival Canisius at the Oxy Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon during Senior Day.
The men's teams fell to the Griffs by a 183-117 score, while the women dropped a 183-117 decision as well.
The meet began with the honoring of eight graduating seniors, including swimmers
Bradley Ash,
Shane Baxter,
Jason Ellis ,
Tore Hansen,
Cody Heimbrock,
Carl Roycroft,
Grace McMahon and
Emily York.
In relay action, the men's 200 medley team of Baxter,
Edgar Melchor,
Shawn Warner and
Eric Ebert took first while the women's team earned second. The combination of Ricks,
Bridgette Ehrmann,
Julia Casolo and
Sydney Kligys finished with a time of 1:55.26, while Baxter, Melchor, Warner and Ebert swam a 1:37.07.
Baxter and Warner led the men's team with three first place finishes each. Baxter took first place in the 100 backstroke (51.09), 200 backstroke (1:54.86) and the 100 butterfly (52.44). Warner earned the top spot in the 200 butterfly (1:56.48), 500 freestyle (4:51.41) and the 200 individual medley (1:59.31).
Melchor touched the wall at 1:01.62 in the 100 breaststroke for second while
Ryan Monteleone took second in the 3-meter dive with a score of 265.65.
On the women's side, Kligys placed first in the 100 butterfly (1:01.51) while
Emma Pullano took the top spot in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.58.
On the board,
Cara Mergner finished the afternoon with a score of 184.05 in the 3-meter event which was good enough for first place.
The Purple Eagles earned several second-place finishes throughout the meet. Ricks secured second in the 100 backstroke (1:03.27), York finished with a time of 56.49 in the 100 freestyle for second and
Emily Deck finished second on the board in the 1-meter event with a score of 177.75.
The Purple Eagles wrap up the 2014-15 regular season next Saturday, Jan. 24 on the road when Niagara travels to St. Bonaventure. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
