Men’s Basketball Welcomes Iona Friday

The Niagara Purple Eagles begin a three-game homestand on Friday, Feb. 7 when they host the Iona Gaels at 7 p.m.
 
After falling in two road contests last weekend, Niagara returns to the friendly confines of the Gallagher Center where it will play five of its final eight games of the regular season. Niagara defeated Marist, 80-74, in its previous home contest.
 
The Purple Eagles have dropped the last two meetings against Friday's opponent, Iona, including the first encounter last month, but won an overtime thriller the last time the teams met at the Gallagher Center.
 
Tipoff Tidbits
• Antoine Mason moved into seventh all-time in career scoring at Niagara on Feb. 1 after netting a team-high 19 points at Marist. Mason is 12 points away from moving into sixth place.
• Marvin Jordan needs 31 3-pointers to tie Tyrone Lewis ('10) for first in career 3-pointers at Niagara (290).
• Ramone Snowden set career-highs in points (23), field goals (nine), 3-pointers (four) and steals (three) at Iona on Jan. 4. Snowden scored all 23 points in the second half and led the game with three steals.
• Marcus Ware, who has scored in double figures in three straight games, is averaging 14.7 ppg while shooting 44 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line and is leading the team in rebounding at 5.7 per game in the last three games.
• Niagara is 23-6 at the Gallagher Center in February since the 2006-07 season.

•  Mason LEADS the nation in free throws made (197), free throw attempts (266), field goals made (189) and in field goals attempts (426).
•  Mason accounts for 35 percent of Niagara points which LEADS the country.
•  He holds the highest scoring game in the MAAC this season (career-high 39 vs. Brown).
•  He is SECOND in the nation in fouls drawn per 40 minutes (8.5).

• Antoine Mason has 27 straight games in double figures.
•  His career-high 39 points versus Brown are tied for the 36th most in NCAA Division I this season.
•  Mason has nine 30-point games this season, including a stretch of five straight (Nov. 21-30).
• Mason scored at least 20 points in 11 straight games dating back to last season (snapped on Dec. 6) and has scored at least 20 points in 19 of 23 games this season.
• Mason has scored at least 20 points in a half eight times this season, including six times in the second half (five straight from Nov. 21-30).

•  Antoine Mason entered the top-20 all-time scorers list at Niagara on Nov. 30.
•  Mason, who started the season 38th on the list, is currently seventh and is 12 points away from moving ahead of Chris Watson ('97) for sixth all-time.  
 
Charity Starts At Home
•  Antoine Mason moved ahead of Alex Ellis ('58) for third all-time in free throws made. Mason, who has 513 in his career, is 141 free throws away from tying Calvin Murphy ('70) and Juan Mendez ('05) for first place.
•  Mason, the nation's leader in free throws made and attempts, is 45 free throws away from tying Calvin Murphy for most in a single season. Murphy set the single-season school record (242) during the 1967-68.
 
February Fever
•  Niagara is 37-18 in the month of February since the 2006-07 season, including a splendid 23-6 mark at the Gallagher Center.
• NU had its streak of a .500 record or better during the month for sixth straight seasons snapped last season.

Jordan Climbing NU's 3-Pointers Chart
•  Marvin Jordan is second at Niagara in career 3-pointers surpassing Lorenzo Miles ('07) on Nov. 22.
•  Jordan needs 31 triples to tie Tyrone Lewis ('10) for first.
• Jordan holds the Niagara freshman (77) and sophomore (83) single-season 3-point records.
 
On The Court
Iona Gaels (13-8, 10-2 MAAC)
•  Iona is 7-2 and is currently on a five-game winning streak since defeating Niagara on Jan. 4
•  The Gaels lead the conference in scoring (83.5 ppg), field goal percentage (48.4), assists per game (17.7), assist/turnover ratio (1.7) and 3-point field goals per game (10.4).
•  Four Gaels are in double figures scoring, led by Sean Armand (18.5). A.J. English leads the team and fourth in the MAAC with 4.1 assists per game. David Laury is fifth in the MAAC in rebounding with 7.3 per game.      
 
Against The Gaels (Iona leads, 40-34)
•  The Purple Eagles are 7-10 in the last 17 meetings against the Gaels.
•  The teams met three times last season, with each team protecting home court. The rubber match went to Iona as it defeated top-seeded Niagara in the MAAC Tournament Semifinals on its way to claiming the tournament championship.
•  Niagara fell in the first meeting this season at Iona to lose the last five trips to Iona.
