NIAGARA UNIV, N.Y. – The Purple Eagles started where they left off last night, out playing the AIC Yellow Jackets throughout most of the game, but fell 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at Dwyer Arena.
Isaac Kohls found the back of the net to give Niagara (0-8-0; 0-4-0 AHA) the 1-0 lead just over four minutes into the game.
Chris Lochner fed the puck to
Nick Cecere at the right point and the defensemen got the puck down to an open Kohls just below the left face-off circle. The junior settled the puck down and scored far side for his first tally of the season.
The Purple Eagles outshot the Yellow Jackets (2-4-1; 2-3-1 AHA) 18-9 through the opening 20 minutes on the way to a 42-24 advantage after the full 60 minutes.
"We were pretty close to hitting 50 shots on goal again, and I thought we controlled the play, but unfortunately it just wasn't enough," head coach
Dave Burkholder said. "They capitalized on some of their grade-a's and we didn't. That's the difference in the game and not much else can be said."
After NU took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission, AIC scored a pair of quick goals less than two minutes apart to take a 2-1 lead with eight minutes expired in the second. Niagara tied the game with 3:30 left in the frame when
Stephen Pietrobon deflected a
Keegan Harper shot past the AIC goaltender. The tie was short-lived as the Yellow Jackets regained the lead 58 seconds later and took the 3-2 lead into the third period.
"We just got the momentum back and unfortunately we had a bad back-check, guys not picking up, and they had a tap-in layup," Burkholder said of the winning goal. "Those are things that we need to stop doing and it's hurting us."
Niagara held a 12-8 shot advantage and had the majority of the quality chances down low, but were unable to break through and an empty-netter with 20 seconds remaining gave AIC the 4-2 win.
Six Purple Eagles got onto the score-sheet and five tied with four shots on net. Jackson Teichroeb started his second-consecutive game and made 20 saves in the loss. Niagara went 0-for-3 on the power play and a perfect 2-for-2 on the penalty kill.
The Purple Eagles hit the road next weekend for a two-game set against Bentley. Puck-drop on both Friday and Saturday is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
