WATERTOWN, Mass. – The Niagara Purple Eagles couldn't recover from a three-goal second period from the Bentley Falcons and fell 6-0 at the John A. Ryan Skating Arena on Friday night.
The first 20 minutes were a split decision with Bentley (4-4-0; 2-1-0 AHA) capitalizing on its power play chance early in the period. It took 33 seconds with the man advantage for the hosts to take a 1-0 lead when a scrum by the left post resulted in the go-ahead goal. Niagara (0-9-0; 0-5-0 AHA) owned the final 10 minutes with the better scoring chances and a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, but still faced the one goal deficit heading into the intermission.
"There were times throughout the night where we had the more energy, we won the faceoff game, and I thought we were the more physical team, but they scored on their chances and we didn't," head coach
Dave Burkholder said. "We got another 33-shot performance and their goalie made some big saves when we had sustained pressure. We'll get back at it tomorrow looking for a win to change our season."
NU had the upper hand in the face-off circle with a 36-24 advantage on the night.
A three-goal second period saw the deficit climb to four goals. This time Niagara had the upper hand early with a few good chances on shifts before Bentley scored its second on snap shot from the right hashmark. From there a goal on an odd-man rush and another with seven seconds remaining on a power play put Bentley up 4-0 heading into the second intermission.
The third period saw Bentley score two more goals on the way to a 6-0 win.
Jackson Teichroeb made 34 saves on 40 shots in the loss.
Robert Angiolella and
Chris Lochner both had nine wins in the faceoff circle, going 9-for-14 and 9-for-13, respectively.
Niagara has a shot to split the weekend when these teams meet again tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m.
