Niagara Finishes Regular Season with Loss to St. Bonaventure

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara swimming and diving teams finished the 2013-14 regular season with a home meet against the St. Bonaventure Bonnies at the Oxy Aquatic Center on Saturday afternoon during Senior Day.

The men's teams fell to the Bonnies by a 145-86 score, while the women dropped a 172-62 decision.

The meet began with the honoring of eight graduating seniors, including swimmers Andrew AmesEmily YorkAshley HarringtonEmily KisloskiMorgan MolfinoChelsea O'LaughlinNathanial Resila and Alex Siuda.   

"Today our team came together acted and performed as a team," head coach Ben Nigro said.  "They battled a very strong St. Bonaventure team and put up some great times.  This sets us up very well for MAAC Championships in a couple of weeks."

Christopher Fritschi earned one of the top times of the afternoon for the men, swimming the 1000 freestyle in 10:39.62 for first place.  Cameron Braz was not far behind his teammate, clocking in at 10:49.75.  Shawn Warner added a pair of first-place finishes to his resume in the 200 IM (1:56.63) and 100 butterfly (53.99).   

Other notable finishes included Robert Brown's second-place time in the 50 freestyle (21.79) and the 100 freestyle (48.68),Shane Baxter's 51.48 swim in the 100 backstroke for second and Carl Roycroft's second-place finish in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.89).

Sydney Kligys wrapped up the regular season with the women's only first-place finish, touching the wall at 25.69 in the 50 freestyle. 

The Purple Eagles earned several second-place finishes throughout the meet.  Montanna Valler secured second in the 1000 freestyle (11:13.42), and Meredith Ricks touched the wall at 1:01.98 in the 100 backstroke for second. 

In relay action, the men's and women's 200 medley team earned second.  The combination of Ricks, Harrington, Kligys and York finished with a time of 1:54.95, while Baxter, Roycroft, Warner and Brown swam a 1:36.47. 

On the board JaRon Williams finished the afternoon with a score of 221.70 in the 3-meter event and 213.90 in the 1-meter event, both good enough for second place.

The Purple Eagles will now prepare for the 2014 Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.  For the fourth consecutive year they will take place at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y. with Canisius College and Niagara co-hosting the three-day event from Feb. 13-15.  Tickets can be purchased through the MAAC website.
