Swimming & Diving Opens 2014 with Home Meet vs. Buffalo


NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara swimming and diving teams return to the pool Saturday after a layoff of nearly two weeks, as the Purple Eagles host Buffalo at the Oxy Aquatic Center.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.

Last Time against Buffalo
This will be the third consecutive season the Purple Eagles will start the New Year in the pool against Buffalo.  Last time these two squads met was on Jan. 12, 2013 where the men lost 147-80, and the women dropped a 139-96 decision to the Bulls.  

Breaking Records
The Purple Eagles have not been in action since partaking in the Zippy Invitational from Dec. 6 through Dec. 8.  The men wrapped up competition in fifth place out of five teams with 1074 points, while the women placed ninth out of nine teams with 321 points.
 
Thirteen Niagara records were broken during the three-day meet, including 10 individual records and a trio of relay records.  Shawn Warner led the way with five individual records and now stands as the top-time holder in the 500 freestyle (4:35.51), 400 IM (4.03.04) and 200 butterfly (1:55.12).  The 100 backstroke record was broken three times throughout the meet, first by Meredith Ricks (58.50) during the relay lead-off which was broken by Sydney Kligys during the 100 backstroke preliminaries (58.34).  Ricks came back in the final round to take back the top-time, clocking in at 58.26.  In the 100 butterfly, Kligys first tied the NU record (58.69) before breaking the record she shared with Aubrey Kettrick ('13) with a time of 57.77.

In relay competition, the women's 200 freestyle and medley relay swam record-breaking times, while the men's 800 freestyle relay now hold the Niagara record.

Up Next for NU
Following this weekend's meet the Purple Eagles will take a short drive to Buffalo on Saturday, Jan. 18 to battle cross-town rival Canisius.  The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
 
2014 Swimming & Diving MAAC Championships
For the fourth consecutive year, the 2014 Men's and Women's Swimming & Diving Championships will take place at the Burt Flickinger Center at Erie Community College in Buffalo, N.Y. with Canisius College and Niagara co-hosting the three-day event from Feb. 13-15  Tickets can be purchased through the MAAC website.
