Purple Eagles Prepare to Battle the Stags

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y.— The Niagara women’s lacrosse team will look for its first win over the Fairfield Stags in program history on Saturday, April 6 as the Purple Eagles welcome their conference foe to Niagara Field at noon.

Purple Eagles 101
Niagara will welcome Fairfield to Niagara Field with a 4-8 overall mark and a 0-2 MAAC record.  

The Purple Eagle attack is led by sophomore Carrie-Jo Farrugia  who has pocketed 24 points and 15 assists in 12 games, while adding nine goals.   Freshman Danielle Maio and senior Maria Battista are tied for first on the team with 17 goals, while both have garnered 23 and 18 points, respectively. 

Paige Matecki has won 30 draw controls thus far, while Kayla Smith has grabbed 18 ground balls, won 19 draw controls and forced 11 turnovers on her opponents. 

Paige Sasser will be between the pipes for Niagara, as the junior has stopped 103 shots for a 13.41 goals-against average and a .393 save percentage. 

Last Time Out
Niagara dropped its second conference game of the season to Canisius on Wednesday evening, falling to its crosstown rival, 14-4 at Niagara Field.
 
Paige Matecki, Danielle MaioKristen Winter and Emily Fleetwood each found the back of the net, while Matecki led the offense with two points (1-1-3).  Paige Sasser wrapped up the game with 10 saves.

Scouting the Stags
The Stags come to Monteagle Ridge with a 6-6 overall record, and a 1-1 MAAC mark.  Fairfield’s last contest ended in a tight 9-8 win over Marist on April 3. 

Chloe Mangan is tops on the team in goals (27) and points (34), while Melanie Raso is second on Fairfield in points with 21.  Raso, along with Amanda Best and Courtney Chmil have all netted 15 goals in 12 games this season.

Katie Keenan has appeared in 11 games in goal for Fairfield, posting a 6.43 goals-against average and .562 save percentage. 

All-Time vs. Fairfield
The Purple Eagles will be meeting up with the Stags for the 17th time in a series where Niagara has yet to pocket a victory since the first matchup in 1997.  Last season, the Purple Eagles opened conference play against Fairfield, dropping a 14-5 decision to the Stags at Alumni Field. 

Up Next for NU
Niagara will hit the road next Saturday, April 13 to take on Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y. at 1 p.m.  The team’s final home game of the season is on April 20 against Manhattan when the Purps return to Monteagle Ridge.
