Niagara Heads to Siena to Wrap Up Regular Season

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s lacrosse team will head to Loudonville, N.Y. on Saturday, as the Purple Eagles will face off against Siena at 3:30 p.m. in the 2013 season finale.

Purple Eagles 101
Carrie-Jo Farrugia  has been at the forefront of the Purple Eagle attack, collection a team-high 34 points off 17 goals and a team-high 17 assists.  The offense has also been headlined by Danielle Maio who has dished out 22 goals to goal along with eight assists.  Maria Battista and Fran Pollastro have chipped in with 21 and 18 goals, respectively. 

Paige Matecki leads the way with 34 draw controls won, while Maio has secured 31.  Caroline Grosso and Kayla Smith have been effective on the defensive end, causing a combined 25 turnovers. 

Paige Sasser has played and started in all 15 games so far this season.  She holds a 13.66 goals-against average and a .413 save percentage, with 143 saves to her name. 

Last Time Out
The Purple Eagles celebrated their seniors on Saturday afternoon at Niagara Field, in the final home game of the season.  The game went in favor of the host team as NU pocketed its first conference win of the season with an 11-10 victory over the Manhattan Jaspers.

Junior Maria Battista earned six points off a trio of goal and assists, while sophomore Carrie-Jo Farrugia followed close behind with five points (4 goals; 1 assist) and three won draw controls.  Danielle Maio also added to the Purple Eagle attack with a pair of goals and two assists.

Goaltender Paige Sasser was solid between the pipes, making 13 saves, including eight in the second period. 

Scouting the Saints
Siena is currently fourth in conference standings, as they are 3-11 overall, and 2-3 in conference play.  The Saints snapped a three-game losing streak when it defeated Iona, 12-10 on Saturday.  

Sarah Croutier is Siena’s leading points scorer, with 21 goals and a team-high 15 assists.  Katie Maguire leads the team in goals (25), while Alyssa Treanor and Lauren Smith are third and fourth, respectively in points and goals on Siena. 

Goaltending duties have been split between Ashley Holdridge and Danielle DeListo.  Holdridge holds a 2-6-0 record on the season with a 10.44 goals-against average and a .424 save percentage.  DeListo is 1-5-0 in six games, owning a 13.40 GAA and a .356 save percentage. 

All-Time vs. Siena
Although Niagara holds a 9-7 advantage over the Saints in the all-time series that dates back to 1997, Siena has taken 5 of the last 7 games.    

Last season the Purple Eagles dropped a tightly contested 13-11 decision to Siena with Fran Pollastro (2-1-3), Carrie-Jo Farrugia (1-1-2) and Courtney Pierce (0-1-1) contributing to the NU scoresheet.
