NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s lacrosse team returns to the road on Saturday, April 13 when the Purple Eagles travel to New Rochelle, N.Y. for a MAAC contest against the Iona Gaels. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Purple Eagles 101
NU is still in search of its first MAAC victory since April 3, 2011 when the Purple Eagles defeated Manhattan 9-8. The team holds a 4-9 overall record, and a 0-3 conference mark.
The Purple Eagles have four players with 15+ goals.
Danielle Maio and
Maria Battista lead the way with 18 scores each. However,
Carrie-Jo Farrugia leads in points with 28 thanks to her 12 goals and 16 assists.
Defensively,
Kayla Smith and
Caroline Grosso lead the team with a combined 22 caused turnovers and 36 ground balls.
Goalie
Paige Sasser has logged over 771 minutes, recorded 115 saves and holds a 13.76 goals-against average and a .394 save percentage.
Last Time Out
The Purple Eagles fell to Fairfield 18-7 on April 6 at Niagara Field.
Carrie-Jo Farrugia and
Katherine Pille led Niagara’s offensive effort with four points and two points, respectively.
Fran Pollastro,
Danielle Maio and
Maria Battista each added a score for the Purps as well.
Paige Sasser made 12 saves.
Scouting the Gaels
Iona is 3-8 overall and 1-1 in conference play, winnings its last game versus Manhattan, 16-9.
The Gaels have been led by Kyle Gregory, who was recently named MAAC Player of the Week. The senior has notched 36 goals and eight assists for a team-leading 44 points. Mary Kate McCormick is second on the team in goals (15) and points (20), while Brittany Mabus is tops on the Gaels with nine assists.
Maria Ortiz will likely earn the nod in goal. The junior has made 74 saves for a 13.19 goals-against average and a .402 save percentage.
All-Time vs. Iona
The Gaels command a 6-2 all-time record against the Purple Eagles, including wins in the previous six meetings after Niagara beat its conference rival in the opening two contests of the series.
Last year, the Purple Eagles fell to the Gaels 16-7 at Niagara Field. Seven different Niagara players notched goals for the Purps, including
Carrie-Jo Farrugia,
Fran Pollastro and
Courtney Pierce.
