Women’s Lacrosse Prepares for Two-Game Road Trip

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s lacrosse team hits the road for another pair of games starting off with Cincinnati on Tuesday, March 5 at 3 p.m. and wrapping up on Thursday, March 7 at 2 p.m. at Detroit Mercy.

So Far This Season
The team is still looking for its first win of the 2013 campaign, dropping its first four contests of the season. 

Fran Pollastro leads the Purple Eagles with six points, all coming off goals, while Brittany Delano (4-1-5), Carrie-Jo Farrugia  (3-2-5) and Danielle Maio (2-3-5) are tied for second with five points each. 

Paige Sasser has played a majority of the minutes for Niagara, making 27 saves in four games. 

Last Time Out
The Purple Eagles dropped their home opener to Robert Morris, 18-7, on Saturday at Niagara Field.  The Purple Eagles battled back from a 5-1 deficit early in the second half to cut the Colonial’s lead to two, but RMU would outscore the Purps 10-1 over 13 minutes to take a commanding 17-6 lead. 

NU was led by Carrie-Jo Farrugia would score a pair of goals and added an assists, while Fran Pollastro contributed two scores.  The Purple Eagles also received goals from Kayla Smith, Danielle Maio and Brittany Delano

Scouting the Bearcats
Cincinnati welcomes NU to Nippert Stadium for its home opener with a 1-1 record.  The team recently dropped a 16-5 decision at Oregon, with their first win of the season coming against Coastal Carolina, 13-8. 

Thus far, the Bearcats are led by Courtney Curtis who has tallied five goals, and added one assists for six points.  Megan Bell, Kylie Ramsland and Taylor Young have each scored three goals in two games, while Ashley Helmrath is second on the team with five points (two goals, three assists).

Meg Gulmi is the go-to goalie for Cincinnati, owning a 12.00 goals-against average and a .467 save percentage in 120 minutes of play. 

First Time For Everything
This will be the first meeting between the Bearcats and Purple Eagles. 

Taking a Look at the Titans
Detroit has played four games so far during the 2013 season, owning a 1-3 overall mark with its most recent game ending in a close 11-10 defeat to Marquette.  The Titans will wrap up their five-game road trip at Notre Dame tomorrow, before opening their home slate against Niagara.

Zaynib Hamze leads the Detroit Mercy offense with 10 points (six goals, four assists).  Michaela Schwartz is tops on the team with seven goals, and is tied for second with Tessa Keuler with eight points each. 

Lexie McCormick will likely earn the nod in between the pipes as she has made 41 saves in 197 minutes for a .527 save percentage and a 11.29 goals-against average. 

All-Time vs. Detroit Mercy
The Purple Eagles hold a 3-1 advantage in the all-time series against the Titans that began back during the 2009 season.   

The last time these two squads met was last season when Niagara squeaked by Detroit, 14-13 off Fran Pollastro’s game winning tally with five seconds left in the contest.  Pollastro wrapped up the game with five goals, while Carrie-Joe Farrugia pocketed a three-point night with a score and two assists. 

Up Next
Niagara returns to Monteagle Ridge for a pair of games starting with St. Bonventure on Tuesday, March 12 at 7 p.m.  The Purple Eagles then welcome Long Island University to Niagara Field on Saturday, March 16 at 1 p.m.

Conference Play
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play begins in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. for the Purple Eagles when they play Marist on March 30.  Niagara then hosts Canisius on April 3 at 7 p.m.
