Purple Eagles Start Conference Play at Marist

NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s lacrosse team begins the MAAC portion of its schedule at Poughkeepsie, N.Y. on Saturday, March 30 when the Purple Eagles take to the field against the Marist Red Foxes at 3 p.m. at Leonidoff  Field.

Purple Eagles 101
Niagara wrapped up the non-conference schedule with a 4-6 mark, the most wins in non-conference action since 2006 when the Purple Eagles when 4-1.  During the 10-game stretch, NU went on a three-game winning streak after dropping Detroit Mercy 9-7 in overtime, tallied the program’s first-ever win against St. Bonaventure and defeated LIU Brooklyn 16-6. 

The Purple Eagle offense is led by Carrie-Jo Farrugia who has tallied 10 goals and a team-leading 13 assists for 23 points.  Danielle Maio is not far behind with 18 points in 10 games (13 goals; 5 assists), and Maria Battista has been solid in the attack with a team-leading 15 goals. 

Paige Matecki is the go-to Purple Eagle for draw controls, winning 25 so far this season, while Maio and Kayla Smith have each picked up 15 ground balls. 

NU goaltender Paige Sasser has played in all 10 games this season, making 87 saves for a .414 save percentage and a 12.47 goals-against average.    

Last Time Out
The Purple Eagles pocketed a 14-4 win over the Delaware State Hornets last Sunday in the team’s final non-conference game of the season.

The offensive contributions came from all across the Niagara roster as ten different Purple Eagles scored.  Carrie-Jo Farrugia (1-2-3) and Fran Pollastro (3-0-3) led the way with three points each, and Jaclyn Schreiber (2-0-2) and Cassi Johnson (2-0-0) each earned a two-point afternoon. 

Scouting the Red Foxes
Marist welcomes the Purple Eagles to Leonidoff Field with a 3-7 overall record, and having dropped its last four contests to wrap up the non-conference schedule.

The Red Foxes have received offensive contributions from all across the board, with Tierney Larson (5-23-28) and Ashley Miller (21-2-23) leading the charge in points.  Amanda Tuck is second on the team in goals (19) and Kirsten Vicount is second on the Red Foxes with five assists on the season. 

Kristen Astarita leads Marist in ground balls picked up with 20, while Jamie Romano is tops in draw controls won (40). 

Ashley Casiano has been the go-to goaltender for Marist, seeing action in all 10 contests thus far.  In 539 minutes of play, Casiano has made 77 saves for a .425 save percentage and a 11.57 goals-against average. 

All-Time vs. Marist
The Red Foxes hold a slim 11-7 advantage over Niagara in an all-time series that dates back to 1997. 

The two teams squared off last season in the Purple Eagles’ final game of the season, where the Red Foxes came out with a 15-5 victory at Niagara Field.  Fran Pollastro netted a pair of goals, while Carrie-Jo Farrugia scored as well in the loss.
