ALBANY, N.Y. – The Niagara women's lacrosse team wrapped up the three-game road trip with a 19-6 loss to the Albany Great Danes on Wednesday afternoon.
"We faced a much better team today," head coach
Wendy Stone said. "Their attack was disciplined and took advantage of every opportunity they had. We gave them far too many possessions. Albany is a good team, and they were ready to play today. We will continue to work each and every day to be better the next time out."
Albany took control of the game early, grabbing a quick 4-0 lead in the opening five minutes of play. The Purple Eagles would then match the Great Ganes goal for goal on scores by
Fran Pollastro and
Brittany Delano, but Albany utilized a 10-0 run head into intermission with a 14-2 lead.
After Allie Phelan opened up the second half with a goal about two minutes in, Niagara would score the next pair of tallies from
Danielle Maio and
Paige Matecki. The Great Danes would go on a 4-2 run in the final 15 minutes of play to put the game away.
Katherine Pille and
Kristen Winter would score Niagara's two final goals.
Delano led the team with two points (1-1-2). Goaltender
Paige Sasser made seven saves on the game, while
Nicole Wawro added one save after taking over goaltending duties.
The Purple Eagles return to Monteagle Ridge on Saturday, March 2 when they host Robert Morris in the team’s home opener. The action is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at Niagara Field.
