HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Niagara swimming and diving teams wrapped up their trip to Colgate University with a split in the Lineberry Natatorium on Sunday afternoon. The Purple Eagle men downed the Raiders 180-102, while the women fell 197-90.
"The men battled today and came out on top. They showed a great fighting spirit against Colgate," head coach
Ben Nigro said. "Our women came back after a tough loss yesterday to Siena. I thought they swim very well today and had some great performances."
The men scored eight impressive wins in individual events, and took home the pair of relay events against the Raiders. Niagara won the 200 medley relay at 10:15.08 with the team of
Shane Baxter,
Carl Roycroft,
Shawn Warner and
James Crumm. The 400 freestyle relay team made up of Crumm,
Eric Ebert,
Cameron Braz and
Robert Brown won the event with a time of 3:16.13.
In the individual events, the Purps were led by Warner with victories in the 200 butterfly (2:00.05), 500 freestyle (4:42.83) and 200 IM (1:59.09). Baxter added a trio of wins as well, claiming the top spot in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.22, the 200 backstroke at 1:52.49 and the 100 butterfly (52.54).
Brown secured an individual win in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:45.52, and the 50 freestyle at 22.60, while Roycroft pocketed first in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.98).
On the women's side,
Emily Hughes claimed the team's only first place finish, recording a score of 193.35 in the 3-meter diving event. She also earned second in the 1-meter dive with a score of 183.82.
Sydney Kligys and
Meredith Ricks continued their strong seasons in the pool as Kligys secured second place in the 100 backstroke (1:01.18), 100 freestyle (55.73) and the 100 butterfly (1:01.17), while Ricks placed second in the 200 freestyle, clocking in at 2:04.48.
The Purple Eagles will return to action on Dec. 6-9 as Niagara takes part in the Zippy Invitational at Akron, Ohio.
