FAIRFIELD, Conn. - The Niagara women's lacrosse team lost its first conference contest of the season to the Fairfield Stags, 14-5, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

"We didn't play our game today," head coach Amber Hill said.  "Our big shooters didn't come out and our defense took the brunt of it and they did a fantastic job.  We have to learn to want the ball more and learn how to finish if we're going to turn this season around."

The Purple Eagles (2-5; 0-1 MAAC) trailed the Stags (6-3; 1-0 MAAC) after sophomore Paige Matecki grabbed her fifth goal of the season off a feed from senior Emily French  8:18 into the game.

Goals from freshman Carrie-Jo Farrugia  and French kept Niagara in striking distance of their opponents, but Fairfield tallied four straight in the final ten minutes of the period to take a commanding 8-3 lead heading into the second half.

French and Courtney Pierce would each net one for the Purple Eagles in the second thirty minutes of play, but a 6-2 run by the Stags, including two goals by freshmen Courtney Chmil and Katie Carroll, solidified the victory Fairfield.

Sophomore goaltender Kaitlin Sorgi made two saves for the game.

The Purple Eagles return to Monteagle Ridge this Tuesday, April 3 when they host the Notre Dame Falcons at 7 p.m.
