Amherst, NY – In a soggy game that featured two weather delays, the Niagara men’s soccer team saw three streaks come to an end on Friday night in a 2-1 loss to Big 4 rival University at Buffalo.
“It was a tough game and a tough situation,” head coach
Chase Brooks said after the game. “Unfortunately we fell a little short tonight.”
The Purple Eagles (5-2-1) and the Bulls (5-4-1) played through a scoreless first half. Coming out of the break, the teams would have to sit through two separate weather delays due to thunderstorms.
“I thought the guys battled hard again in tough conditions,’ said Brooks, “and again, unfortunately it wasn’t there tonight.
In the 6oth minute, UB would break the tie with a goal from Lucas Felder. Felder’s goal ended Niagara’s 363-minute shutout streak.
With three minutes left in the second half,
Carl Haworth tied the game for Niagara on a penalty kick. That goal is Haworth’s seventh goal of the season and third goal in as many games. After the penalty kick, however,
Roberto Andersson received a red card that not only removed him from the game, but will make him ineligible for Niagara’s next match.
The game headed into a brief overtime that would last only two minutes where Buffalo’s Richard Craven would score to win the game and end the Purple Eagles’ three-match winning streak and their six-match unbeaten streak.
“We have to learn from our mistakes and move forward as we head towards conference,” Brooks said. “We have to pick ourselves back up and get on with business.”
Niagara is back in action next weekend with a pair of home games against conference opponents as the Purple Eagles play Marist on Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. and Siena on Sunday at 1p.m.
