Men’s Soccer Shuts Out Robert Morris

Box Score

Niagara Univ., N.Y. - In a game that started in sunshine and ended in a thunderstorm, the Niagara men’s soccer team blanked the Robert Morris Colonials, 2-0 to extend their unbeaten streak to four games.

Robert Morris (1-2-1) controlled play early in the first half. The Colonials’ Francis Bowman missed on two nice opportunities, sending both a header and a shot wide of Niagara’s net.

The Purple Eagles (3-1-1) came to life with 16 minutes left to play in the half. Bryan Da Cruz had five solid scoring chances for Niagara but was equaled by the Colonials’ keeper, Toba Bolaji, who made some incredible saves to keep the game tied at 0-0.

The rain stopped on cue as the players came out for the second half. Niagara came out flying and Callum Willmott tapped in a header from Michael Pass to put the Purple Eagles up 1-0. The excitement was short lived as the game went immediately into a weather delay due to lightning.

"Fortunately we went through the same thing last weekend so we've dealt with a bit of adversity like that," coach Chase Brooks said about the weather delay.  "The guys were focused, ready to go, and we took care of business."

After the delay, the Colonials grabbed the momentum but Niagara keeper Brett Petricek made several good saves to keep RMU without a goal.

"Brett's been quality as of late, he's a very good goal keeper and we're very fortunate to have him," coach Brooks said about Petricek.  "The back four and our goalkeeper had their best game to date and the shutout reflects that."

Niagara was able to pad their lead with seven minutes left in the half when Carl Haworth capitalized on a free kick from outside of the box for his fourth goal of the season.

Niagara resumes action this weekend when it plays in the Green Bay Soccer Classic against Green Bay on Friday at 7 p.m. and Eastern Illinois on Sunday at 10 a.m.
