Men's Soccer Comes From Behind to Earn a Point

Box Score

BALTIMORE, M.D. – The Niagara men’s soccer team came from behind yet again to earn a point against the third place Loyola, tying the Greyhounds 1-1.

“It was another team effort,” head coach Chase Brooks said after the match, “from goal keeper to striker everybody did their job and we got the result.”

Niagara (8-4-4, 3-2-3) would get the first few shots of the game but Loyola (9-4-2, 4-2-1) would finish the half registering four shots and two corner kicks.  The Greyhounds would carry their momentum into the second half and would strike first as Kevin Curran scored his first collegiate goal to pull Loyola in front 1-0.

The Purple Eagles would outshoot the Greyhounds down the stretch and would tie the game in the 86th minute as Carl Haworth sent a cross to Callum Willmott who converted a header.  The goal was the freshman’s fifth of the season (four of which are game-winners).

“Callum keeps coming up big at big times, he’s worked hard and we’re starting to see the fruits of that labor,” Brooks said about the freshman from Iver, England.

“Carl is Carl, he has that engine that makes him a fantastic player," he continued about his senior forward, "and we are fortunate to have them both.”

“We keep going back to the work we put in the pre-season and how hard we worked.  We are one of the fittest teams in the country and we kept plugging away, got our opportunity, and buried it.”

Loyola would outshoot the Purple Eagles in OT (4-3) but Niagara would put the lone shot on net.  Brett Petricek made four saves in his 15th start of the year.

Niagara plays in its last game of the regular season when it hosts rival Canisius at 5:30 p.m. next Friday.
