NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara swimming and diving team were swept in a meet against Cleveland State with the Vikings claiming the men’s event by a 143-88 score and the women’s event by a 148-89 score.
“The excitement level was the highest I have seen from this team,” said head coach
Ben Nigro. “Cleveland State is a very strong program and today our teams competed with them.”
The freshmen had a strong show for the men. Rookie
Shane Baxter took top honors in the 100-yard backstroke, breaking the Niagara University record, clocking in at 52.08. The record was previously set by Kevin Klein with a time of 52.76 in 2004. Fellow newcomer
Corban Bothell had two come from behind wins in the 1000 freestyle in a time of 10:00.63 and the 500 free, finishing in 4:53.76.
The women’s team was led by junior
Julia Bulmahn who won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.06. Sophomore
Emily Kisloski earned second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:32.35. Kisloski and teammates Bulmahn,
Ashley Harrington, and
Chelsea O'Laughlin placed second in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 1:45.92.
Both teams are back in the pool on Oct. 21 when they compete against the Fredonia State Bluedevils inside Steele Hall. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5 p.m.
