SPRINGFIELD, MASS. - Senior Bryan Haczyk netted a pair of goals to help the Niagara men's hockey team (12-7-2, 9-5-0 AHA) to a 3-2 win over the host American International Yellow Jackets (4-12-1, 4-9-1 AHA) at the Olympia Ice Center on Friday night. Niagara has now matched it's win total from the 2009-10 season in the triumph over AIC, the first-ever meeting between the two teams.
Haczyk netted his second goal of the night when he streaked down the right of the ice on a breakaway and roofed it over the shoulder of AIC netminder Ben Meisner for the 3-2 lead with under six minutes to go. With his two goal performance on Friday night, Haczyk now has six goals in his last three games.
"Haczyk has had the hot stick as of late and buried a big time goal for us tonight," Niagara head coach Dave Burkholder said. "Haczyk buried a goal when we desperately needed a lift. It was a good road win tonight, with Chris Noonan playing a solid game and a season-high in blocked shots."
AIC struck first just 4:53 into the opening stanza, when off the draw, Whitney Olsen ripped a shot from against the boards that beat junior netminder Chris Noonan over his glove shoulder.
Niagara would tie the game three minutes into the middle stanza, when senior Paul Zanette curled in the slot and beat Yellow Jackets netminder Ben Meisner low, stick side for his 17th goal of the season. After Zanette tied the game, Niagara would kill off over four minutes of consecutive penalties, including two five-on-three advantages. Haczyk extended his consecutive game point streak to 17 games on his first goal of the game, after intercepting an errant pass and beating Meisner on a partial breakaway to give Niagara a 2-1 lead.
The Yellow Jackets would tie the game halfway through the third period, when Michael Penny would beat Noonan with a wrist shot from the point.
"It's a good feeling to contribute, but it's important to win the game," Haczyk said. "I don't care about streaks or points as much as I do about victories."
Senior blueliner Ryan Annesley continued his strong play with two assists, giving him six helpers in his last three games. Noonan made 34 saves in a victory that pushes the Purple Eagles to 8-0-1 when leading after two periods this season.
The Purps conclude their two-game series with the Yellow Jackets on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.
