KALAMAZOO, MICH. – The Niagara men’s soccer team suffered a 5-2 defeat against the Western Michigan Broncos on Friday afternoon from the WMU Soccer Complex.
“I give credit to Western Michigan, because they played well; however, I’m extremely disappointed in our level of performance,” head coach Dermot McGrane said. “We didn’t come ready to play and you will lose if you don’t at this level.”
Despite the score, Niagara (0-2-0) took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Senior talisman Levi Tesch scored his first goal of the season on a direct free kick that skipped past the goalkeeper at the near post in the 23rd minute.
WMU (3-1-0) answered with five-straight goals in the second half. The Broncos stole momentum 53 seconds into the start of the second half when Luis Lemus pounced on a loose ball in the box to tie the score at 1-1. WMU would run off three-straight goals in a five-minute span for a 4-1 advantaged. The Broncos scored their final goal in the 83rd minute on a breakaway.
Junior Carl Haworth slotted home a penalty kick in the 80th minute for his first goal of the season.
Niagara will travel to East Lansing, Mich. to play No. 23 Michigan State on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
