Manhattan Gets By Women's Lacrosse

Caitlin Sacco

RIVERDALE, N.Y. - A 16-5 halftime deficit was too much for the Niagara women's lacrosse team (1-10, 0-5 MAAC) to overcome, falling to the host Manhattan Jaspers (3-12, 1-5 MAAC) by a 20-7 margin on Friday night.

The game started with the two teams trading goals, with Niagara's Leigh Downing responsible for tying the game at one. The Jaspers would then take a 3-1 lead before Caitlin Sacco scored her first of the game to keep the Purple Eagles within one. Manhattan would break the game open with a 13-3 run to take a 16-5 lead into halftime.

Emily French scored the first goal of the second half seven and a half minutes in, looking to spark a run for the Purple Eagles, but the Jaspers would outscore Niagara by a 4-2 margin in the final 30 minutes for the victory.

Downing and French led the Purple Eagles with two goals apiece, while sophomore netminder Alma Aponte made seven saves.

The Purple Eagles will wrap up the 2010 season when it travels to take on Iona on Sunday.
