Men's Hoops Falls In MAAC Semifinal, 69-63

ALBANY, N.Y. - The No. 6 Niagara men's basketball team (18-15) fell in the 2010 MAAC Semifinal round on Sunday evening, losing 69-63 to the No. 2 Fairfield Stags (22-9). The loss brings an end to the careers of four student-athletes who were part of the winningest seasons in Niagara history.

"It's tough to even break down the game when you have to say goodbye to an incredible group of seniors," Niagara head coach Joe Mihalich said.

The group was part of the 26-win campaign a season ago, the second-most wins in program history. Tyrone Lewis, the only graduating senior to play all four seasons at Niagara, will go down as the biggest winner in school history, collecting 86 wins since the 2006-07 season, including a MAAC Championship and an NCAA Tournament win.

He finished the contest with 20 points, inlcuding five 3-pointers, in the loss. His running mate Bilal Benn just missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Rob Garrison added five points and a pair of assists and Demetrius Williamson had two points and four rebounds.

The contest saw seven ties and 15 lead changes. The Purple Eagles led 58-51 with 7:16 remaining after a pair of free throws by Benn but went cold down the stretch. NU finished 1-for-8 from the floor and added two free throws in the final minutes of the contest.

Lewis finishes his career as the only player in MAAC history to record 1,500 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 200 steals. He totaled 1,849 points, 523 boards, 222 assists and 250 steals while adding 290 3-pointers. Benn scored 965 points and pulled in 679 rebounds. Both players earned Second-Team All-MAAC honors this season, a year after being named to the First-Team last season.

Junior Anthony Nelson recorded his 500th assist in the loss, moving into sole possession of second place on the school's all-time chart, trailing Alvin Cruz ('05) who handed out 630 dimes in his career. He recorded a double-double with 12 points 10 rebounds and five helpers.
