NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara men's hockey team (11-19-4, 6-10-2 CHA) continued its string of success on Senior Day, defeating the visiting Robert Morris Colonials (10-18-5, 6-9-3 CHA) at Dwyer Arena on Saturday night.
The Purple Eagles are now 5-0-1 in their last six Senior Day games, outscoring foes by a 28-11 margin.
"I think we dictated the pace for most of the game," head coach Dave Burkholder said. "We hung in there and had plenty of jump."
Niagara took a 1-0 lead halfway through the first period, when senior Tyler Gotto let go a shot from the left point, that beat Colonials netminder Brooks Ostergard. Six minutes later, freshman Giancarlo Iuorio gave Niagara the 2-0 lead after he slammed home a rebound from a David Ross shot.
The Purple Eagles took a 3-0 lead seven minutes into the middle stanza, when senior Ryan Olidis left a drop pass for fellow senior Egor Mironov, whom promptly wristed the puck over the right shoulder of Ostergard. Mironov's goal was his 50th career goal, placing him all alone in eighth place on Niagara's career goal scoring list. Stefan Salituro beat Noonan halfway through the second period to come within two.
Mironov added his second of the night on the power-play in the third period, a slap shot from the point that gave Niagara a 4-1 lead. Salituro added his second goal of the night with under three minutes left to play, but the Colonials wouldn't come any closer.
Sophomore Chris Noonan made 28 saves in the winning effort.
The Purple Eagles have now won four of their last five games and will take on the top-seeded Bemidji State Beavers at 7 p.m. on Friday in the semi-finals of the 2010 CHA Tournament, a game which will be broadcasted on the Niagara Sports Network.
