NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara men's hockey team (7-16-4, 2-7-3 CHA) fell into a 2-0 hole that they couldn't overcome, dropping its third straight 3-2 decision to CHA rival Alabama-Huntsville (8-13-2, 4-6-1 CHA) at Dwyer Arena on Friday night.
With the game tied at two early in the third period, the Chargers scored the game-winner, when Justin Cseter curled into the slot and beat Purple Eagles netminder Adam Avramenko five-hole. The score would hold, even after a last-ditch effort by the Purps to tie the game.
"We stuck with it tonight," head coach Dave Burkholder said. "They are a tough team to play against. The result tonight was disappointing, but the good news is that we have four of our final seven games at home."
The Chargers bolted out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Chris Fairbanks and Cody Campbell, until Niagara finally got on the board approximately halfway through the second period. Senior Chris Moran's pass found Tyler Gotto in the slot, which Gotto snuck past Chargers netminder Cameron Talbot on the backhand. Moran's assist gives him 95 career helpers, tying him with Barret Ehgoetz (2001-05) for the most in Niagara history.
The Purps would tie it late in the middle frame, when a Ryan Olidis pass found Moran in the slot for a one-timer that beat Talbot low, glove side.
The Purple Eagles will be back in action on Friday, February 19 when they take on the Bemidji State Beavers.
