SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The Niagara men's hockey team (0-1-2, 0-0-0 AHA) hung tough with No. 18 Union (4-1-0, 0-0-0 ECAC) before a four-goal second period pushed the Dutchmen to a 6-1 win over the Purple Eagles on Friday night.
After a scoreless first period where the Purple Eagles outshot the host Dutchmen by a 9-4 margin, Niagara had to hang tough. Freshman netminder Carsen Chubak was busy in the second period as Union outscored the Purps by a 4-1 margin and outshot them by an 18-3 margin. Niagara's lone goal was freshman Scott Arnold's first career-goal, coming with 2:48 left in the middle stanza.
"We had some early pressure which lasted most of the first period, but we just couldn't put one on the scoreboard," Niagara men's hockey head coach Dave Burkholder said. "Our breakdowns in the second period were unfortunately gamebreakers and made it tough for us to make any type of comeback."
The Dutchmen would add two more goals, against newly-inserted sophomore goalie Andrew Hare in the third period to seal the victory. Chubak made 15 saves, while Hare made nine.
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Saturday night, when they visit RPI at 7 p.m. Saturday night's game will be broadcast on Time Warner Buffalo and Time Warner Albany.
