NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara University swimming and diving teams had some strong efforts, but were swept by Little Three rival St. Bonaventure on Saturday afternoon. The Bonnies claimed the men's competition by a final score of 144-96, while winning the women's competition by a 133-107 margin.
"Today's meet and tomorrow's contest against Binghamton are setting the table nicely for where we want to be heading into the MAAC Championship meet," head coach Ben Nigro said.
In the men's competition, Kevin Jennings won the 50 yard freestyle event with a time of 22.23, while Brian Sawma took home first place in the 100 yard butterfly event, clocking in at 53.71. Nick Squire took home top honors in the 500 yard freestyle event, finishing in a time of 5:01.28.
In the women's competition, Stephanie Gartley finished in first place in the 100 yard breaststroke, finishing the event in a time of 1:10.31. Aubrey Kettrick (50 yard freestyle) and Lindsey Jackson (400 yard IM) also took home top honors against the Bonnies.
Niagara had a solid day on the diving board, winning three of the four events. Ashley Jones swept the one-meter diving and three-meter diving event, while Chris Zukas took home first place in the one-meter diving event.
"The divers were outstanding today," Nigro said. "Several of them posted their best scores of the year today."
The Purple Eagles are back in action on Sunday, when they host Binghamton in their last home meet of the season.
