NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - The Niagara women's lacrosse team (4-8; 1-2 MAAC) dropped a tough 13-7 game to the visiting Iona Gaels (3-10; 1-4 MAAC) on Senior Day at Niagara Field on Sunday morning.
A celebration of the careers of Whitney Gill (Canandaigua, N.Y.), Trish Pineda (Sanborn, N.Y.), Karley Reynolds (Auburn, N.Y.) and Vanessa Schultz (Clarence, N.Y.) did not go as planned after Niagara surged out to a 2-0 lead early in the contest. Iona would then utilize a 9-1 scoring run to take a 9-3 lead into halftime.
Like the start of the game, the Purple Eagles came out soaring in the second half, netting three goals to cut the Iona lead to 9-6. Sophomore Rianne Farrugia (Elbridge, N.Y.) notched two of her team-high three goals during this stretch. Niagara would keep the offensive pressure going, but would only score once more before the final horn.
The Purple Eagles finish their current three-game homestand with the final home game of the season on Wednesday against Canisius, which is set to begin at 7 p.m.
