NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. - Admist the wintery conditions at Niagara Field, the Niagara women's lacrosse team (0-1; 0-0 MAAC) opened up the 2009 season by dropping a 20-1 decision to the Boston College Golden Eagles (2-0; 0-0 ACC).
The Purple Eagles held their own in the first few moments of the game, mounting a sustained attack before Boston College drew first blood five minutes in. Senior goalie Whitney Gill (Canandaigua, N.Y.) made half of her 14 saves during the first half, where the Golden Eagles outshot Niagara 23-3. Boston College led 7-0 through the first 30 minutes of play.
The second half saw more of the same, as Boston College scored 12 consecutive goals to take a commanding 19-0 lead. Niagara broke the shutout, when freshman Caitlin Sacco (Syracuse, N.Y.) notched her first career-goal, with the assist from sophomore Rianne Farrugia (Elbridge, N.Y.).
"I was thrilled to have scored my first goal of my lacrosse career at Niagara University today," Sacco said. "We played hard and we expect for things to continue to improve this year."
The Purple Eagles next head to Michigan, to take on Detroit Mercy on Saturday.
