BALTIMORE, Md. - Sophomore Ian O'Rourke (Grand Island, N.Y.) won the three-meter diving event with a new Niagara record of 498 points to cap off a record-breaking day two at the 2009 MAAC Championships, which saw the Purple Eagles break four school records.
O'Rourke was in the lead after eight dives, but after falling out of first place upon completing his 9th and 10th dive, the Western New York native needed a strong final dive to win.
"As a team we are excited to have Ian as a MAAC Championship," head coach Ben Nigro said. "It was his diving coach's birthday and he delivered a great present for her."
Freshman Mike Smiechowski (Apex, N.C.) shattered his own 1,000 freestyle school record by 10 seconds, finishing in sixth place with a time of 9:46.84. The foursome of Jon Matchette (Kenmore, N.Y.), Lucas Shumway (Sanborn, N.Y.), Ryan O'Laughlin (Lewiston, N.Y.) and Evinn Drusys (Yuciapa, Calif.) finished in sixth place in the 200 medley relay, setting their second Niagara record in a medley relay event in two days with a time of 1:36.38.
The women's 800 medley relay team of Dana Vernal (Milford, Conn.), Hope Wiles (Baltimore, Md.), Kaley Pfohl (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and Ashley Clingersmith (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) broke the school record by two seconds, clocking in at 8:03.79, which was good enough for seventh place.
After two days of competition, the Niagara swimming and diving teams are still in contention, with the men's team still in sixth place (200 points), while the women's team has dropped back into eighth place (122 points).
Action resumes tomorrow, with the Purple Eagles looking to climb the leaderboard.
