BALTIMORE, Md. - After one day of competition at the 2009 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships, the Niagara swimming and diving teams are looking strong, with the men's team in sixth place (67 points) and the women's team in seventh place (81 points).
Sophomore Evinn Drusys (Yucaipa, Calif.) helped earn 33 of Niagara's 67 points by taking part in three events, including a part in the 400 medley relay team that broke a record from 1980. The team of Drusys, junior Ryan O'Laughlin (Lewiston, N.Y.), sophomore Jon Matchette (Kenmore, N.Y.), and freshman Lucas Shumway (Sanborn, N.Y.) finished in seventh place in a time of 3:32.04 , nearly two seconds faster then the previous best by Keith Dissington, Kieran Cummings, John Piwtorak and Keith Hughes.
Drusys also finished in ninth place in the 50 yard freestyle event, where he nearly added his name in the Niagara record books again. Drusy's time of 21.29 was less then a second off of Pat Garvey's record pace from 2008. The sport management major also took part in the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 medley relay.
The women's team springboarded into seventh place with help from freshman divers Ashley Jones (Lockport, N.Y.) and Laura Sadler (Des Plaines, Ill.). Jones placed third overall in the one-meter diving event with a score of 217.45, while Sadler finished in seventh place with a score of 184.15.
Junior Ashley Clingersmith (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) finished seventh in the 50 yard freestyle event, with her time of 24.61 just .19 off Traci Liberi's 2005 Niagara record.
