BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Niagara swimming and diving teams fell to cross-town rival Buffalo on Friday night, losing 126-105 in the men's event and losing 143-83 in the women's event.
Freshman Mike Smiechowski (Apex, N.C.) broke Niagara's 18-year old 1,650 yard freestyle record by nearly a second, clocking in at 16:44.26. Smiechowski's time betters Steve Stonehams mark of 16:45.09. Fellow freshman Lukas Shumway (Sanborn, N.Y.) won the 100 yard breaststroke event, with a time of 1:01.55. Sophomore Ian O'Rourke (Grand Island, N.Y.) won both diving events for the Purple Eagles.
For the women, freshman Ashley Jones (Lockport, N.Y.) won the three-meter diving event, with a score of 206.02. Junior Justine Rawding (White Salmon, Wash.) was able to win the 100 breaststroke event, clocking in at 1:14.67. Niagara also won the 200 yard freestyle relay, with the team of junior Ashley Clingersmith (Niagara Falls, N.Y.), Rawding, freshman Kayley Pfohl (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and senior Stephanie Gartley (Camlachie, Ont.) finishing in a time of 1:48.52.
The Purple Eagles return home for Senior Day, taking on St. Francis (N.Y.) at 10 a.m.
