OLEAN, N.Y. - The Purple Eagles men's soccer team (5-2-1) had their chances, but just couldn't convert as they dropped a 2-0 decision to Little Three foe St. Bonaventure (2-2-3) on Sunday afternoon.
Head coach Dermot McGrane saw his team play well, but also noted things that the team can improve on.
"We did not play up to our potential today," McGrane said. "Credit St. Bonaventure for playing a tough game, which in the end they wanted it more."
Just 13 minutes into the game, the Bonnies were pressing, as after a shot was blocked, Dan Mitchell fired the ball into the left corner, past starting Purple Eagle goalkeeper Jason Whitehead (Middletown, N.Y.) for the 1-0 advantage. The Purple Eagles headed into the half down 1-0 and down in shots 8-2.
The second half saw the Purple Eagles sharper on the offensive side of the ball, keeping up stride for stride for the Bonnies. Niagara had several chances to get back into the game, but Bonnies goalkeeper David Flynn made sure to keep the ball out of the net.
The Bonnies would receive another beneficial rebound in the 73rd minute, as Juan Trevino tapped it back in for the 2-0 lead.
Whitehead made five saves on the day, while Flynn also made five saves.
The Purple Eagles are back in action as they travel to the Keystone State to take on Robert Morris on Friday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m.
