NIAGARA UNIV. N.Y. - The Purple Eagles lacrosse team (2-7, 0-2) couldn't tame the Fairfield Stags (12-2, 4-0) as they were defeated 21-9 on Friday afternoon at the Niagara Field.
Undefeated in conference play, the Stags went back and forth with the Purple Eagles for the first 15 minutes of the half for a score of 5-4. Fairfield then scored seven consecutive goals to put the Stags up 12-5 at the end of the half.
Alison Valerio (Geneva, N.Y.) picked up her second goal of the game to start the second half. Whitney Gill (Canadaigua, N.Y.) held the Stags off, allowing no goals for the first eight minutes of the second half. The Stags went on to score six more goals to Niagara's three for a final score of 21-9.
Picking up goals for Niagara was Erralyn Thomas (Ducan, B.C.) who scored five, Courtney Formato (Lancaster, N.Y.) with two and Valerio with two.
Gill made a career-high 19 saves for the Purple Eagles on the contest while facing 50 shots from the Stags.
Niagara remains winless in conference play, and will continue its MAAC portion of the schedule on Sunday when Niagara hosts Marist at Niagara Field at noon.
